Best sunrise and sunset spots in the Dubai desert

Where to watch first light and golden hour around Al Qudra and Love Lake, with winter sunrise and sunset times, photo tips and hot karak from before dawn.

Home › Guides › Sunrise & Sunset Spots

If you search for the best sunrise spots in Dubai, most lists send you to skyline viewpoints and beaches. Out at Al Qudra the picture is different: still water, low light across the dunes, birds waking up and, on a weekday, almost nobody else. Both ends of the day are also the only comfortable hours from late spring to early autumn. This guide covers where to stand, when the sun actually rises and sets between October and April, and how to get a good photograph.

Why dawn and dusk

The light is soft and warm, the wind is usually lower early in the morning, and the temperature is pleasant. At Love Lake, the water is most mirror-like at first light, and the wind tends to pick up after about 9 am. Sunset is busier, because photographers and picnickers arrive together, so get there early to park and choose your spot.

The spots

Love Lake

The most photographed spot, and the best for reflections on a calm morning. Arrive about 30 minutes before first light. A slightly raised edge, or the shoreline itself, helps the heart shapes show. Stay on the hard track and keep off the soft dunes unless you have a 4x4 and the skills. See the Love Lake guide for directions and rules.

Al Qudra Lakes

A string of man-made lakes with ducks, swans and flamingos in season. Sunrise here pairs well with birdwatching, so bring binoculars. Our wildlife and birdwatching guide explains what to look for. Moon Lake, the crescent-shaped one, is quieter and suits a calm dawn or dusk. Details are on our Al Qudra Lakes page.

The cycle track and the dunes beside it

The track runs through open desert with dune views, and many riders time their rides to sunrise. If you are not riding, park legally, stay clear of the tarmac and remember that cyclists move fast. The cycling guide explains how the track is used. On race days it can close to non-participants.

Anywhere with a clear horizon

You do not need a famous name. Any safe, legal spot on a hard surface with an open view to the east at dawn or the west at dusk will do. Never drive onto soft sand for a better angle, and read our desert driving tips if you are tempted.

Sunrise and sunset times in Dubai, October to April

Times below are for the 15th of each month in Dubai time (UTC+4, no daylight saving), computed for central Dubai using the Python astronomy library Astral. "First light" is the start of civil twilight, when the sky starts to brighten. Al Qudra is a short distance away, so allow a minute or two of difference, and check an official source on the day.

Photography tips

  • Go low and wide. The heart shapes of Love Lake are subtle from the ground, so shoot from a raised edge or include the reflection.
  • Use the light behind you for warm colour, then turn round for silhouettes as the sun drops.
  • Wear colours that stand out against beige sand and blue water, such as white, deep green or terracotta.
  • Steady the camera. A small tripod helps in the dim minutes before sunrise.
  • Protect your gear from sand and dust, and charge everything, because you will take more photos than you plan.
  • Check drone rules first. If in doubt, leave the drone at home, and never fly near wildlife.

Planning a pre-dawn start

Winter mornings can be properly cool, so pack a layer. Because nothing is open at the lakes, plan the first stop: Zad is open 24 hours, and on the Al Qudra track the machine is hot long before the sun is up. Karak chai is AED 7, croissants are AED 14 to 15 and cappuccino is AED 17, so you can fill a flask and be at the water in time. Add ice and water for later. The cyclist stop page has the full coffee list. If you are planning a longer day, our Al Qudra guide has a timeline.

Sunset and the drive home

Plan to leave before it gets fully dark. Lighting around the lakes is limited and, once the sun is down, the lakes can look alike, so keep a location pin and a charged phone. The two hours before sunset suit a picnic, and our desert picnic ideas show what to pack. On a moonless night, our stargazing guide covers the sky after the light fades. The Lake Picnic Box for four (AED 199) can be pre-ordered for a sunset slot.
