Al Qudra gives photographers three things the city cannot: space, still water and low light at both ends of the day. A flat horizon, pale dunes, a cycle track that draws a clean line through the frame and lakes full of birds make it one of the most photogenic places within an hour of Dubai.
This guide covers the spots, the best times, simple technique, night-sky basics and the etiquette that keeps the place pleasant for everyone. It is general guidance and rules can change, so follow posted signs.
The one-line plan: arrive 30 to 45 minutes before sunrise, shoot with the light behind you, turn round for silhouettes and pick up coffee and water at Zad before you turn in. There are no shops at the lakes.
1. The photo spots
Love Lake
The most photographed spot, and the best for reflections on a calm morning. A slightly raised edge, or the shoreline itself, helps the heart shapes show. Directions, rules and the best light are in our Love Lake guide.
Al Qudra Lakes and Moon Lake
Ducks, swans and flamingos in season, with open desert behind. Flamingos are usually at a distance, so a zoom lens beats walking closer. Moon Lake, the crescent-shaped one, is quieter. See the wildlife and birdwatching guide for timing and etiquette.
The cycle track and the dunes beside it
Tarmac, dunes and big sky: the track is a natural leading line, and riders add scale. Park legally, stay clear of the track itself and remember that cyclists move fast. On race days the track can close to non-participants, so check the events calendar. Our cycling guide explains how the track is used.
Anywhere with a clear horizon
You do not need a famous name. Any safe, legal spot on a hard surface with an open view to the east at dawn or the west at dusk will do. Never drive onto soft sand for a better angle, and read our desert driving tips if you are tempted.
2. Golden hour and sunrise timing
Photographers use "golden hour" for the period shortly after sunrise or before sunset, when daylight is redder and softer than when the sun is high. There is no official definition, and it varies with season and location, so treat it as roughly the first and last hour of usable light.
On the 15th of the month in Dubai time, sunrise is about 06:17 in October, 06:35 in November, 06:56 in December, 07:06 in January, 06:53 in February, 06:28 in March and 05:57 in April. Sunset is about 17:51, 17:30, 17:31, 17:50, 18:12, 18:27 and 18:41 over the same months. These are computed times from our sunrise and sunset guide, which also has the first-light times, so check an official source on the day.
- Arrive early: 30 to 45 minutes before sunrise gives time to park, walk and set up.
- Light behind you for warm colour on dunes and water, then turn round for silhouettes as the sun climbs or drops.
- Weekdays are calmer than weekends, and wind tends to pick up later in the morning, so the water is most mirror-like at first light.
- Sunset is busier because photographers and picnickers arrive together. Come early to park, and leave before full dark.
3. Simple technique that works
- Go low and wide. The heart shapes of Love Lake are subtle from the ground, so shoot from a raised edge or include the reflection.
- Use the empty space. A single rider, bird or tent against a big sky is stronger than a crowded frame.
- Wear colours that stand out against beige sand and blue water, such as white, deep green or terracotta, if people are in the shot.
- Steady the camera. A small tripod helps in the dim minutes before sunrise.
- Protect your gear. Sand and dust get everywhere, so keep lenses capped, change them out of the wind and charge everything the night before.
- Zoom for wildlife. Turn off flash and the shutter beep, sit still for 20 minutes and let birds come back.
4. Night sky photography
Away from the city glow, Al Qudra gives a much darker sky than Dubai itself, though the city still shows on the northern horizon. Face away from it. The darkest windows are new-moon weekends, and our stargazing guide lists the 2026-27 new moons: 10 October, 9 November, 9 December, 8 January, 6 February, 8 March and 7 April, with meteor-shower peaks between them.
- Use a tripod and a wide, fast lens if you have one, and a remote or timer to avoid shake.
- Let your eyes adapt for about 20 minutes and avoid phone screens. A red torch protects night vision.
- Scout the spot in daylight, park on the hard track and do not drive onto soft sand in the dark.
- Desert nights from November to March can be properly cold, so bring layers and a flask. Karak is AED 7 at Zad.
- Tell someone where you are going and drop a location pin before you lose signal.
Overnight camping at the lake edge is restricted, so check the rules in Dubai camping rules and permits before planning a long night shoot.
5. Etiquette and rules
The lakes sit inside a protected conservation reserve, and the rules exist to keep the water clean and the wildlife undisturbed.
- Keep a respectful distance from birds and animals, never chase them and never feed them.
- Stay on hard tracks and park legally. Do not walk or drive onto soft sand or crush plants.
- No swimming in the lakes, and keep music and voices low because sound carries over water.
- Ask before photographing other visitors, and give riders room on the track.
- Take every scrap of rubbish home. Littering fines in Dubai start at AED 500.
- Drones: rules for flying them in Dubai are strict and have changed over time. We do not give drone advice, so leave yours at home unless you have checked the current official guidance and hold any permit required.
6. Fuel for a dawn shoot
Zad is open 24 hours, and hot coffee is poured before sunrise. A cappuccino is AED 17 (24 large), karak chai is AED 7, croissants are AED 14 to 15 and water starts at AED 2, so you can fill a flask, grab breakfast and still reach the water in time. Add ice for the drive home. The breakfast and coffee guide has the full early-morning list.
