Al Qudra is open desert with almost no shade, so when you go matters more than where you stand. The short answer: come between October and April, aim for a weekday if you can, and be at the water around sunrise or in the last two hours before sunset. This guide breaks that down by season, month, day of the week and time of day, so you can match the trip to what you want to do.
Weather figures below are long-run city averages from published climate tables, so desert conditions can differ a little, and rules and conditions change. Treat it all as planning guidance, and check the forecast and posted signs on the day.
The one-line answer: November to March, on a weekday, at sunrise. Buy water, ice and coffee at Zad at the Last Exit first, because there is no shop at the lakes.
1. The short version: two seasons
Dubai has what is effectively a cool season and a hot season. Visitor and weather guides put the comfortable outdoor window at roughly October to April, and that matches the camping season: official Dubai Municipality winter camps run from 1 November to 30 April (see our camping rules and permits guide). November to March is the sweet spot, with warm days and cool evenings.
From May to September the desert is a different place. Daytime highs sit around 38 to 41°C in the city averages, and the lakes have no shade. If you visit in those months, go at dawn only, leave by mid-morning and carry far more water than you think you need.
2. Month by month
Average daily highs for Dubai by month, rounded, from published climate tables. Sources differ by a degree or two, and these are city figures, so the open desert is often cooler at night and can feel hotter in the sun.
| Month | Avg. high | What it means at Al Qudra |
|---|---|---|
| October | about 36°C | Still hot by day. Dawn and evening only. Season starts to open. |
| November | about 31°C | Warm days, pleasant mornings. Official winter camp season begins on the 1st. |
| December | about 26°C | Comfortable all day. Busy over National Day and school break. |
| January | about 24°C | Coolest month. Latest sunrise. Bring a jacket for mornings and nights. |
| February | about 25°C | Still cool and clear. Good for long rides and walks. |
| March | about 29°C | Warming up. Spring haze is possible, so mornings are best. |
| April | about 33°C | Last comfortable stretch. Midday starts to bite. |
| May to September | about 38 to 41°C | Too hot for most visits. Dawn only, with plenty of water. |
Rain, when it comes, clusters between about December and March, usually as short showers rather than days of drizzle. Keep out of wadis and low ground when rain is forecast, as our camping rules guide explains. Fog can also form overnight and in the early morning in the cooler months, so if you set off before dawn, drive slowly and keep your lights on low beam.
3. Which day of the week is quietest
Weekdays are calmer, and our family guide and wildlife guide both suggest avoiding the busiest slots from Thursday evening to Saturday. The UAE federal working week has run Monday to Friday midday since January 2022, with Saturday and Sunday off, so it is reasonable to expect more people on Friday afternoon and over the weekend. That is an expectation, not a headcount.
What busy looks like: more cars on the track and at the lakes, fuller parking, more noise and, for birdwatchers and photographers, more disturbance at the water. Special dates make it busier still, namely National Day on 2 and 3 December, the school winter break from 14 December to 3 January and organised rides and meteor nights. Dates are in our Al Qudra events calendar.
4. Which hour of the day
Use the sun as your timetable. Sunrise on the 15th of the month, in Dubai time, runs about 06:17 in October, 06:35 in November, 06:56 in December, 07:06 in January, 06:53 in February, 06:28 in March and 05:57 in April. Sunset is about 17:51 in October, 17:30 in November, 17:31 in December, 17:50 in January, 18:12 in February, 18:27 in March and 18:41 in April. These come from the computed table in our sunrise and sunset guide, so check an official source on the day.
- Before and at sunrise: still water, soft light, birds active, the track at its quietest. Arrive 30 to 45 minutes before the listed sunrise.
- Late morning to early afternoon in winter: the warmest and easiest window for children and picnics.
- Last two hours before sunset: golden light and a gentler lake, but busier, so arrive early to park.
- After dark: stargazing on a moonless night, with warm layers. Leave daylight enough to find your way, because the lakes look alike in the dark.
In the hot months the same logic tightens: only the hour around sunrise and the hour before sunset are realistic.
5. Best time by activity
- Cycling: winter dawn. Nothing is sold on the loops, so fuel up first. See the cycling guide and the cyclist stop.
- Birdwatching: autumn and winter at first light, during migration season. See wildlife and birdwatching.
- Photography: sunrise and sunset in the cool months, on a calm day. See our photography guide.
- Camping and campfires: November to March, within the rules. See the camping checklist and campfire cooking ideas.
- Stargazing: new-moon weekends and meteor-shower nights, listed in our stargazing guide.
- Families: mid-morning to early afternoon in winter, as in our guide to camping with kids.
6. What to pack for the season
- Water: at least 2 litres per person, even in winter. It starts at AED 2 for 500 ml at Zad.
- Ice: a bag is AED 15. Buy it last, on the way in.
- Layers: a jumper for after sunset, and a hat and sunscreen by day.
- Shade: beach umbrellas are AED 20 to 52 at Zad. Assume there is none at the lake.
- A full tank: we do not sell fuel, so fill up before you leave the city.
Kit and prices on this page are the ones on our camping page. They are indicative, so message us on WhatsApp to confirm stock before you drive out.
7. Why Zad fits every season
Zad is open 24 hours a day, every day, at the Last Exit on Al Qudra Road, and it is the last shop before the lakes and dunes. That makes it the fixed point in any plan, whether you are leaving at 4:30 for a sunrise ride or arriving after dark with a forgotten bag of charcoal. Hot coffee, karak (AED 7), croissants and wraps are on the menu, and the outings page lists packed kits you can pre-order for your pickup time.
