Desert picnic ideas for Dubai: what to pack and where

Simple no-cook menus, ways to keep food cold, shade and clean-up rules for a family picnic near Al Qudra, plus the ready-packed box if you would rather not shop.

Home › Guides › Desert Picnic Ideas

A desert picnic is the easiest outing near Dubai, and one of the easiest to get wrong. The setting is beautiful, but there is no shade, no shop and often no bin, and sand gets everywhere. The good news is that a few simple choices make it work: pick a cool time, keep food cold and simple, bring your own shade and take everything home. This guide covers family picnic ideas for Dubai and where to go if you want to leave the city behind.

Where to picnic

If you want open desert and water, the Al Qudra area is the closest option, with Al Qudra Lakes, Love Lake and Moon Lake all free to visit. Our family guide explains what to expect with children, and our Love Lake guide covers the heart-shaped lakes. If you want grills and facilities, look at the municipal parks listed in our BBQ spots guide, where barbecue areas are marked. Confirm fees and rules before you go.

Whatever you pick, go in the cooler months (October to April) and avoid the midday sun. Our Al Qudra activity guide has a day timeline.

What to pack

  • Water: at least 2 litres per person, more if you stay past noon. Water starts at AED 2 for 500 ml at Zad.
  • A cooler and ice: a bag of ice is AED 15. Buy it last.
  • A big mat or blanket: sand is hot by day and cold after sunset. Beach mats are AED 20 to 52.
  • Shade: a pop-up tent or beach umbrella (AED 20 to 52).
  • Folding chairs: picnic chairs from AED 52.50.
  • Bin bags, wet wipes and a towel: lake edges are muddy.
  • Sun protection: hats, sunglasses, sunscreen and, in winter, a jumper for after sunset.

Keep it cold, easy to eat with one hand and free of crumbs. Fewer items means less to carry and less to clean up.

Family lunch

Wraps or sandwiches, fruit such as grapes, apples and bananas, cut cucumber and carrot sticks, a tub of hummus, a bag of dates and cold water. Zad sells wraps and sandwiches (AED 16 to 32) if you would rather buy than make.

Sunrise breakfast

Croissants (AED 14 to 15), karak in a vacuum flask (flasks from AED 25 at Zad) and fruit. It travels well and needs no cooler.

Kids' treat box

Small snack bags, juice, a frozen drink and ice cream from the cooler. London Dairy ice cream starts at AED 12. Eat it first, because it will not last.

No-grill evening

A sunset picnic with cold mezze, bread, olives, cheese and fruit. Skip the fire and enjoy the light. For hot food, our BBQ guide explains the rules.

Keeping food cold

  • Pre-chill everything and fill the cooler to the top. Air space warms faster than ice.
  • Put ice at the bottom and the top, with drinks underneath and food above.
  • Buy ice last, at Zad, so it is solid when you arrive.
  • Keep the cooler in shade and closed. Cover it with a blanket or towel.
  • Use sealed containers so melt-water does not soak sandwiches.
  • Keep raw meat out of a picnic unless you can keep it very cold and cook it properly.
  • When in doubt, throw it out. Dubai heat spoils food faster than you expect.

Shade and comfort

Assume there is no shade at your chosen spot. A pop-up tent, a beach umbrella or a car parked so the boot makes a shaded corner all work. Sit on a mat rather than bare sand, and keep a jumper in the car for the evening. If the wind rises, weigh the corners of the mat down and cover food.

Picnicking with kids

Go mid-morning to early afternoon in winter, or the last two hours before sunset. Bring a ball, bubbles and sand toys, and a small spray bottle for hot faces. Keep children back from soft, muddy edges, because there are no lifeguards and swimming is not allowed. Agree a meeting point and save a location pin before the signal fades. More is in the family guide. A birdwatching game also works well, and our wildlife guide shows what to look for.

Clean-up and rules

This is general guidance, not legal advice, and signs on site take priority. Carry a bin bag and take everything home, including peels, foil and bottle caps. Littering fines in Dubai start at AED 500. Open fires on the sand are not allowed, and camping and fires at the lake edges are restricted, so do not light anything near the water. Do not feed birds or fish, keep music low and stay on the tracks. Read Dubai camping rules and permits for the longer version.

The ready-packed option

If you would rather not shop, our Lake Picnic Box for four (AED 199) includes chicken wraps, water, ice creams, a bag of ice and a beach mat. It is made for exactly this day, and you can pre-order it on WhatsApp for your pickup time. See the outings page for details and the other kits.
