Al Qudra day trip itinerary: sunrise to stars

Three sample plans you can copy or mix: a full sunrise-to-sunset day, a ride-and-breakfast half day and an overnight outline, with realistic timings and one shop on the way in.

Home › Guides › Al Qudra Day Trip Itinerary

Al Qudra rewards a plan. The lakes, Love Lake, the cycle track and the dark sky are all within the same stretch of desert, but there are no shops at any of them, and the hours that feel good change with the season. These sample itineraries show how the pieces fit together, so you spend your day at the water instead of wondering what to do next.

The timings below use mid-November as the example, because it is in the sweet spot of the season: first light about 06:11, sunrise about 06:35 and sunset about 17:30 on the 15th, from the computed table in our sunrise and sunset guide. Shift everything with the sun for other months, and check an official source on the day. This is general guidance, and rules and conditions change, so follow posted signs.

The shape of a good day: fuel up at Zad before first light, spend the cool hours moving, rest and eat in the middle, come back for the last two hours of light, and leave before it is fully dark.

1. How to use these plans

Pick the plan that matches your energy and your group. Each one starts at Zad at the Last Exit on Al Qudra Road, because that is the last shop before the lakes and it is open 24 hours. The drive from central Dubai is roughly 30 to 45 minutes depending on where you start and the traffic, as set out in our things to do in Al Qudra hub, so build that into your wake-up time.

Two rules hold for every plan: download an offline map before you leave, because signal can be patchy, and fill your fuel tank in the city, because Zad does not sell fuel.

2. Plan A: the full day, sunrise to sunset

This is the plan for a clear weekday in the cool season, when the car park is quiet and the water is calm. Times are for mid-November.

TimeWhat to do
About 05:15Stop at Zad. Hot karak is AED 7, a cappuccino AED 17 and a croissant AED 14 to 15. Buy water (from AED 2 for 500 ml) and a bag of ice (AED 15) for later, and use the toilet before you turn in.
About 06:00Arrive at the water, 30 to 45 minutes before the 06:35 sunrise. Park legally on hard ground and walk to the edge. See the Love Lake guide for the heart-shaped lakes, or the Al Qudra Lakes page for the main lakes.
06:35 to 08:30Sunrise, photos and birds. Dawn in autumn and winter is the best shot at wildlife, as our birdwatching guide explains. Our photography guide covers the light.
08:30 to 10:30A walk on hard tracks, or a short ride if you brought bikes. See the cycling guide for the loops.
Late morningBreakfast or an early lunch. A Ranch Chicken Wrap is AED 29 at Zad, or pre-order a Lake Picnic Box for four (AED 199) for your pickup time. More ideas are in our desert picnic guide.
Midday to early afternoonRest in whatever shade you brought. Beach umbrellas are AED 20 to 52 at Zad, and you should assume there is no natural shade.
About 15:30Return to the water for the last two hours of light. It is busier, so arrive early to park.
About 17:30Sunset. Pack up straight after and head out before it is fully dark, because lighting is limited and the lakes can look alike without light.

Short on time? Do the first four rows for a morning, or start at about 15:30 for an evening.

3. Plan B: ride and breakfast half day

Cyclists have a simple rhythm, and it starts in the dark. There is nothing to buy on the loops, so the stop at Zad is part of the ride.

  • Before first light: park at the Last Exit end, drink a coffee and fill your bottles. Hot coffee is available from 4:30 AM, and a Maurten gel 100 is AED 15.75 on the cyclist stop fuel wall.
  • First light to mid-morning: ride the loop that suits you. The track is built as nested loops of roughly 8, 20, 50 and 86 km, and a front light is essential for the early start.
  • After the ride: a smoothie is AED 26, a fresh orange juice AED 22 and a chicken wrap AED 26 to 32. Riding with a club of six or more? The Rider Breakfast (AED 38 per rider) is ordered the evening before, as listed on the outings page.

4. Plan C: the overnight outline

An overnight stay needs more homework than a day trip, because camping is where the rules are strictest. Treat overnight camping at the lake edges and at Love Lake as not permitted, and do not light anything on the sand. Dubai Municipality runs official winter camps at Al Aweer, and a casual short desert trip has been described as not needing prior permission, but approved areas still apply. Read our camping rules and permits guide and confirm with the municipality (800 900) before you commit to a site.

If you have a legal spot, here is how the evening runs:

  • Mid-afternoon: buy firewood, ice and water at Zad on the way in, then pitch the tent in daylight.
  • Sunset: watch the light go, then eat. Our campfire cooking ideas cover simple meals and fire safety, and fires belong in a fire pit or on a stand, never on the sand.
  • After dark: stargazing on a moonless night, with warm layers and a flask. See the stargazing guide for meteor-shower dates.
  • Next morning: sunrise from the tent door, a hot karak, and pack out every scrap of rubbish and cold ash.

Not ready to build a kit yourself? The Camp Night for Two (from AED 289, you keep the gear), the Campfire Night Kit (AED 129) and the Stargazing Kit for Two (AED 129) are all on the outings page. Families will find more in our guide to camping with kids, and the full packing list is in the camping checklist.

5. What to buy at Zad and what to pack

Zad stocks the basics for any of these plans. Prices are the ones on our camping page and menu, and they are indicative, so message us on WhatsApp to confirm stock.

  • Drinks: water from AED 2 (500 ml) or AED 3 (1.5 L), karak AED 7, hot chocolate AED 17.
  • Shade and seating: beach mats and umbrellas AED 20 to 52, picnic chairs from AED 52.50.
  • From home: hat, sunscreen, a jumper for after sunset, a bin bag, a power bank and a charged phone.

6. Planning tips that save the day

Go on a weekday if you can. Weekends and public holidays are busier, as we explain in best time to visit Al Qudra, so arrive earlier on those days. Keep a pin. Save a location pin of your car before you walk off, because the lakes look alike once the light fades. Stay on hard tracks. Soft sand is where ordinary cars get stuck, and our desert driving tips explain why. Tell someone where you are going, as in our desert safety tips.

Frequently asked questions

Can you do Al Qudra in one day?
Yes. A sunrise-to-sunset day is realistic: stop at Zad before first light, spend the cool hours at the water, rest through midday, and return for the last two hours of light. Leave before it is fully dark.
How long should I spend at Al Qudra Lakes?
Two to three hours at sunrise is enough for photos and birds, and a full day suits a picnic and a ride. In the hot months, go at dawn only and leave by mid-morning.
What time should I leave Dubai for sunrise at Al Qudra?
The drive is roughly 30 to 45 minutes from central Dubai, and you should arrive 30 to 45 minutes before sunrise. In mid-November, with sunrise at about 06:35, that means leaving between about 05:00 and 05:30.
Can I camp overnight at Al Qudra?
Treat overnight camping at the lake edges and Love Lake as not permitted. Dubai Municipality runs official winter camps at Al Aweer, and a casual short desert trip has been described as not needing prior permission. Check with the municipality and follow posted signs.
Is there food near Al Qudra Lakes?
There are no shops or cafés at the lakes. Zad at the Last Exit on Al Qudra Road is open 24/7 and is the last shop before you turn in, so buy water, ice and food there.
Where should I park?
Park legally on hard ground, clear of the cycle track, where riders move fast. Do not drive onto soft sand for a better view.
